Diurnal Variability in EMIRS Daytime Observations of Water Ice Clouds During Mars Aphelion?Season
نویسندگان
چکیده
Diurnal analyses of water ice cloud optical depths retrieved from thermal infrared spectra by the Emirates Mars Infrared Spectrometer showed changing abundance throughout Martian day. Observations began with start Mission science phase near beginning aphelion-season in Year 36 and included prominent aphelion belt (ACB) orographic clouds vicinity volcanoes. A midday minimum higher morning afternoon was typical for ACB, though considerable spatial variability this diurnal pattern. Clouds volcanoes reached a before local noon tended to increase afternoon. Comparisons against Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique global circulation model analogous patterns signal, which suggested tides topographic effects be predominant drivers ACB variability, while more localized circulations affected volcano clouds.

Diurnal variation and radiative influence of Martian water ice clouds
[1] We have identified regions in the Martian tropics with anomalously warm nighttime surface temperatures. The seasonal evolution of these anomalies is strongly correlated with the waxing and waning of the tropical cloud belt that is most prominent during Northern Hemisphere summer. We attribute the anomalies to enhanced downward infrared radiation from water ice clouds. The close agreement wi...
متن کاملThe Seasonal Behavior of Water Ice Clouds in the Tharsis and Valles Marineris Regions of Mars: Mars Orbiter Camera Observations
The Voyager and Galileo images of Europa and the Viking Orbiter images of Phobos revealed the surface cracking and fracture systems of the satellites of Jupiter and Mars. The complex system of lineaments and grooves cover the whole surface of these satellites. Based on earlier studies we compared the main characteristics of these structures and propose a joint model of the layered structure (Ph...
متن کاملThe radiative impact of water ice clouds from a reanalysis of Mars Climate Sounder data
The radiative impact of water ice clouds on the atmosphere of Mars is analyzed via a reanalysis of Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) temperature and ice opacity profiles. Polar hood clouds only have a small radiative impact, while tropical clouds increase diurnally averaged temperatures at the 10 Pa level by ∼10–15 K. Cloud radiative heating strengthens the meridional overturning circulation, increasi...
متن کاملThe Radiative Impact of Water Ice Clouds from Assimila- Tion of Mars Climate Sounder Data
Introduction: Here we investigate the radiative impact of martian water ice clouds on the atmospheric temperature and circulation via the assimilation of Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) temperature and ice opacity profiles, and dust optical depths, into a Global Climate Model (GCM). Recent observational and modelling studies have begun to reveal the importance of water ice clouds in terms of modifyi...
متن کاملOn water ice formation in interstellar clouds
A model is proposed for the formation of water ice mantles on grains in interstellar clouds. This occurs by direct accretion of monomers from the gas, be they formed by gas or surface reactions. The formation of the first monolayer requires a minimum extinction of interstellar radiation, sufficient to lower the grain temperature to the point where thermal evaporation of monomers is just offset ...
